5 Warning Signs of Mold in Your Home

Mold can be found almost everywhere, especially in homes. It is often confined in the basement, but it can also show up in the walls and floors throughout the house. Often hidden at first, mold can become quite visible and potentially stain walls, ruin upholstery, and even clothing. We’ve put together 5 key warning signs of mold, so that you can work to mitigate the problem before it takes over.

Unexplained Symptoms

If you are having odd symptoms but can’t put your finger on it, there may be a mold infestation in your home. Symptoms of a hidden mold issue include sneezing fits, itchy skin, headaches, and eye irritation. If you experience fatigue, hair loss, headaches, vomiting or diarrhea, immediately contact a mold remediation expert to eliminate the problem.

Mold Smell

Once you smell mold, you will never forget that stench again. If the smell becomes more intense when the heat or air conditioning comes on, there may be mold in the HVAC system of the house. If you do not know what mold smells like, recreate the scent by leaving a damp washcloth in a Ziploc plastic bag, with just enough air to let little air in. Place the bag in a dry, dark place for a few days. Open the bag and prepare your nose for the worst. We can also inspect for mold, if you have trouble detecting for it.

Water Issues

If your water bill is abnormally high, this may be a sign that you have a leak somewhere. That leak may be affecting the interior of your home and be a sign that you have a hidden mold problem. Be sure to fix it quickly to minimize the growth of mold spores.

Humidity

If a room or the basement perpetually feels damp and humid, there may be mold hiding somewhere. If you can’t tell feel whether or not there is a lot of moisture in the air, check for evidence of condensation. During the summer, check the HVAC ducts for condensation. Try to ameliorate the mold by dehumidifying the area, if not the entire home. It may also be helpful to run a HEPA filter to eliminate any mold spores in the home.

Leaky Roof

If you have a leaky roof, there is a good chance that it has created ample breeding grounds for mold. Try to follow the path of the water and search out any signs of mold infestation in the home. Also, look for water stains in corners and along baseboards, where you might not often check. Try to address this as quickly as possible, as mold can ruin walls and floors, forcing you to do repairs that go above and beyond patching the initial leak.
